What opportunities are there for immigrants with little to no money? What education can immigrants with little-no money receive?
Immigrants that come to America with little to no money is a very common situation that some immigrants fall into. Close to 26 million foreign-born people, or 17 percent of the country’s labor force, worked in the United States in 2014. (“Ten Myths” ) These workers are more likely to be employed by the service industry, while native-born workers are more likely to hold jobs in management, professional, sales and office occupations.(“Ten Myths” ) Immigrants can receive a good education but is sometimes hard. It is well documented that poverty decreases a child’s readiness for school through aspects of health, home life, schooling and neighborhoods. Six poverty-related factors are known to impact child development in general and school readiness in particular.(“Ten Myths” ) It requires physical well-being and appropriate motor development, emotional health and a positive approach to new experiences, age-appropriate social knowledge and competence, age-appropriate language skills, and age-appropriate general knowledge and cognitive skills Does being born into a certain societal class affect how you grow up? American’s that are born into a certain tend to stay in the same class. But the people in each class tend to be very different. Poorer people tend to cling to other for support while richer people are more independent and don’t need as much support. People from lower-class backgrounds are better at reading other people’s emotions. (“Social Classes”) They’re more likely to act altruistically. “They give more and help more. If someone’s in need, they’ll respond,” says Keltner. (“Social Classes”) While on the other hand richer people. In psychology experiments, wealthier people don’t read other people’s emotions as well. How big is the wage gap between the poor and the rich?
The wage gap is huge between the poor and the rich. The Poorest 20% of the people are receiving 3.1% while the top 20% of the rich are receiving 51% income. (Frohlich) Also American’s top 1% more than doubled between 1979 and 2011.Incomes across the nation have increased since the recession, but income inequality has also increased. (Frohlich) Incomes among the richest 20% of households grew faster from 2006 through last year than they did among the poorest 20% of households in all 50 states without exception. (Frohlich) How big is the middle class, and what is its role in society.
In early 2015, 120.8 million adults were in middle-income households, compared with 121.3 million in lower- and upper-income households combined. (Madland) Like during the Progressive period in America the middle classes role is to buy goods and services so money circulates through the environment. Today middle classes families have similar roles by buying goods and services that businesses are selling so money circulates in the economy. When the middle class is strong the government is strong and if the middle class is weak the government is weak. |
